Mocha is shutting down on August 1

After two years, we’ve made the decision to sunset Mocha. The app builder will shut down on August 1, 2026.

We started Mocha with a bet: that anyone with an idea should be able to build actual, useful, real working apps — with auth, databases, backends, and one-click deploys. We believed the people locked out of building software had some of the best ideas of anyone, and we wanted to put those tools in their hands.

For a lot of you, it worked. Real small business owners and creators built genuinely useful software with Mocha: customer portals, booking systems, internal tools, side projects that turned into businesses. People who’d never written a line of code, running their work on software they built themselves. That part was real, and it’s the part we’re proudest of.

Why we’re closing

The business underneath had its challenges. A combination of high user acquisition costs driven by competition, expensive unit economics from the AI tokens the product requires, and high support costs all compounded into making this a capital-intensive business. We weren’t able to raise the funding needed to withstand that over the long run, and the business isn’t sustainable without more capital.

Closing now is the right call for our team and our investors. It also lets us wind down responsibly — with enough runway to do right by the people who built on Mocha.

Where Mocha apps are going

We care a lot about our customers, so we spent real time finding the right home for your apps, and we found one in Anything. They share our philosophy: integrated, opinionated, built for people who describe outcomes and want working software. As a bonus, they support mobile apps, something many of you have been asking us for.

They’ve built a one-click migration that ports your Mocha apps over to their platform and keeps them live. We’ve tested it. It works. Their team is also providing dedicated help to anyone migrating over.

Move your apps to Anything →

What this means for Mocha users

  • The Mocha service will run until August 1, 2026. Any apps you wish to keep using will need to be migrated off the platform before then.
  • To transfer to Anything, follow this link. You’ll get $20 in free credits to assist with post-migration edits.
  • To export your data and migrate manually, we’ve released an export tool so you can download your code and data. It’s in app Settings → Export. To be transparent: setting this up on your own outside of Mocha will require engineering effort. We recommend migrating to Anything.

Billing

Subscriptions will continue at their current rate until August 1, and no one will be charged after that. You’re welcome to cancel anytime before then, and anything still active will auto-cancel on August 1. Your apps remain accessible for migration through then regardless, so cancelling now still gives you the full three months to move.

After August 1

Mocha’s app builder will stop working: no more building, previews, or live apps on our platform. The migration link to Anything and the export tool will remain available for 30 days after shutdown so you can still move your data, but we strongly recommend completing migration before the deadline.

Questions

For anything Mocha-related, email us at [email protected]. Ben and I will be answering personally through August 1. For migration support or questions about Anything’s platform, reach out to [email protected].

To everyone who built something with Mocha: thank you. It has been a privilege to see what you made, and watching it was the best part of this journey. We’re sorry we couldn’t take it further.

The era of idea people and personal software isn’t over. It’s just beginning.
